According to a statement from the US Embassy in Vietnam, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the Directorate of Fisheries, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam

This is a project announced during the visit of US Vice President Kamala Harris to Vietnam last August.

With a budget of 2.9 million USD funded by USAID, the project will be implemented over 3 years with the aim of preserving coastal habitat in the Mekong Delta to improve the sustainability of the fisheries sector and enhance adaptation to climate change.

The Mekong Delta and surrounding island clusters are home to 70% of mangrove forests and 90% of seagrass beds in Vietnam.

However, this region is also facing increasing threats.

Through a cooperative mechanism with businesses, local authorities, the management board of Phu Quoc National Park’s Marine Protected Area and the fishing community, the project will be implemented to minimize threats to marine life.

Geographically, the project will focus on implementation in the lowest and most vulnerable coastal areas of the delta along the East Sea, West Sea, Phu Quoc Marine Protected Area, as well as on 3 small island clusters in Phu Quoc.

The project includes 3 main parts.

The project is expected to contribute to addressing systemic threats in the Mekong Delta, supporting measures being implemented by the Government of Vietnam.
